Editor’s note: In March a friend hosted a birthday bash fundraiser at the Rockport Opera House; it was a giant contra dance party and it was over the top in fun, laughter, and community goodwill. One of the country’s most sought after dance bands, Maine’s own Perpetual e-Motion, played rocking tunes with Will Mentor calling from the stage, looking out through his orange glasses and over his laptop at the allemandes and swings on the floor. Emma Hamm, a student at UMaine Orono, arrived early with a small film crew to make a documentary about  contra dancing and community. Bravo, Emma! Your efforts added significantly to the energy of the evening.

Like what you see? Intrigued? Terrified? Come dance tonight at the Belfast Flying Shoes Contra! It will be a swingin’ good time with Elixir playing and Nils Fredland calling. The music alone is reason enough to come. But the dancing…oh, the dancing! Can’t make it tonight? Nils and Elixir will be on stage again tomorrow at the historic North Yarmouth dance. Details here.

What are you waiting for?
