The Child’s Book About Whales
paintings by Scott Kelley
Scott Kelley is known for his intricately detailed watercolors of birds, warps, whales and children. His new exhibition of children’s portraits, rich narrative paintings of children in the height of the 19th century whaling industry, read as both historic and contemporary, with foxing effects painted into the paper and the use of period clothing and artifacts juxtaposed with fresh young faces that feel utterly current. The show is titled The Child’s Book About Whales, after a curious book Scott discovered at the Maine Historical Society, filled with vivid images of whaling.
The Child’s Book About Whales opens tomorrow night, Friday, May 3rd, with a reception from 5-8pm at Dowling Walsh Gallery in Rockland.

I attended the opening at Dowling Walsh and found Scott Kelley’s paintings intriguing and beautifully rendered. I also had a great discussion with him about his work and decision to paint the subject. Thank you! Betsy
Fantastic, Betsy! Great you made it out and had a chance to talk with Scott.
